Day 4

______________________

Good Morning Penang! Last day in Penang and we’re going home later (I missed my hamsters RoRo and FiFi as they were left alone at home. I tried leaving them home alone for 3D2N previously and this was our first trip leaving them home alone for 4D3N. Hope they would be fine.

This morning, we revisited Kafe Kheng Pin for their famous Lor Bak (卤肉) and Wonton Mee mentioned in Day 3 of the trip. After that, we head to the coffee shop opposite Kafe Kheng Pin for some Klang-style Bak Kut Teh (BKT – 肉骨茶), literally translated as ”Meat Bone Tea” (Which is actually Pork Ribs that’s simmered in herbs and spices soup). While most Singaporeans prefer Teochew-style BKT (Which uses lots of pepper and garlic in the soup), Vance and I actually preferred the Klang-style which uses more traditional herbs resulting in a thicker broth.

We liked the BKT here as the soup was quite thick and there’s lots of ingredients like Tau Kee (Beancurd sticks), Tou Pok, meatballs, pig intestines, mushrooms, ribs etc. Best of all, we got to choose what we wanted (or don’t want) for the BKT.

Next, we went to Goh Thow Chik Hainan Chicken Rice located in Chulia Street for chicken rice as Sky Café (WAI KEE – 槐记密味叉烧) next to Goh Thow Chik was closed (Suppose to be closed on Monday and not on Sunday). We understand that the Char Siew and Roasted Pork belly are really delectable and usually get sold out by 1pm.  Anyway, Goh Thow Chik was very crowded and packed with locals so we thought food would be great. However we find the chicken rice average tasting only. We still prefer Singapore’s version of Chinese Rice.

We went shopping at Penang Times Square but really nothing to shop there (only some miserable shops on Level 1). Hopped to 1st Avenue Mall and Prangin Mall (again) and we had some really nice toast in Old Town White Coffee. We like the Crunchy Sugar Thick Toast and the Condensed Milk Thick Toast, not forgetting the White Milk Tea that’s really creamy and fragrant.

On our way to Penang International Airport (Pickup by Ocean Jupiter used in Day 1). Departed Penang on Jetstar (3K676). I would like to mention that there’s really nothing much to shop in Penang International Airport (especially after clearing immigration point). How I missed shopping in Changi International Airport!

Home Sweet Home and both RoRo and FiFi were doing fine! In fact, they have gained weight when left ‘Home Alone’!

I would like to conclude on our trip to Penang with these notes.

We Love
No. 1 – Extremely good and cheap hawker food
No. 2 – Authentic Nyonya food (In fact better than those found in Malacca and Singapore)
No. 3 - Friendly Penang People
No. 4 - Extremely Patient drivers [In fact, traffic conditions in Penang is quite chaotic (jams everywhere) but Penang drivers don’t horn at all! (Unlike Singapore drivers)
No. 5 - Safe streets

We Hate
No. 1 – Bad 3G network, make us realised that having 4G network in Singapore is really great! (For DIGI – Not sure about the other networks as our prepaid card from DIGI)
No. 2 - Hot weather (just like Singapore’s flaming weather)
No. 3 – Hectic roads, try crossing those busy roads and you will know it
(Tips : Use your Ironman’s hand if required, it actually works!)
No. 4 -
Taxis (For not using their meters when they are supposed to)
No. 5 - Using GPS in Penang can be difficult as well, as some shops are located in small alleys

We understand that driving in Penang can be extremely chaotic as traffic is really dense. If you intend to drive in Penang, do check your blind spots frequently as there are many motorcycles zipping around and cutting lanes recklessly. Parking is another hair raising and frustrating experience as we can see that there’s hardly any empty lots around in Georgetown.

Farewell Penang! Hope to come back soon to explore more good food! Folks, thanks for staying tuned! :D
