Day 5

Las Vegas (31 Jul 2012)

Good morning San Francisco! We are leaving you now for Las Vegas (aka Sin City)! Why is Las Vegas labelled as Sin City? Cos there’s so many forms of adult entertainments that you can find in Las Vegas.

We took a domestic flight from San Francisco (SFO) to Las Vegas (LAS) on board Southwest Airlines 2958 (Flight Time : 1 Hr 35 mins).

Look at the horrendous queue… This is definitely NOT the queue for the latest gadget but for the airport security check. As passengers need to go through the Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) screening, do check in at least 2 hours before flight time.

We are on board the aircraft now. Unlike the budget airlines in Singapore, non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are complimentary for South West Airlines ( For energy drink, wine, liquor or beer, a top up of US$3-US$5 applies.

Once we stepped out of the aircraft, the first thing(s) that ‘welcomed’ our arrival at McCarran International Airport were the slot machines?! *Question Mark*

McCarran International Airport welcomes visitors to the fabulous Las Vegas with slot machines around every corner…

Gambling and entertainment in Las Vegas are mostly focused in the Las Vegas Strip (aka The Strip). Hence, accommodations along the strip are generally affordable, thanks to the ‘sponsorship’ received from the gamblers. Reasonably priced shuttles service (about US$7 one-way) are readily available from the airport to most hotels. Taxis are also easily available and there is the Las Vegas Monorail that runs along The Strip.

The place that we are going to stay for 2 nights… Harrah’s Las Vegas is situated in the center of The Strip. Rooms are clean and spacious. But there is no coffee/tea maker in the room. In fact, it is not common to find coffeemaker in most hotels in the States. Check-in is strictly at 4 pm (i.e. early check-in is chargeable).

First stop in Las Vegas, Garden of the Gods Las Vegas Pools located in Caesars Palace. Featuring 8 swimming pools, a 18-foot tall waterfall, roman statues, luxurious cabanas etc, For non-hotel guests, there is a US$20 admission fee on Fridays – Sundays. Opens 10 am – 5 pm daily We visited Garden of the Gods on a Wednesday, i.e. free admission for us. However, a couple of pools were closed for maintenance. So the overall experience was not as expected (In fact it was fairly disappointing). There’s a free 10 mins show “Fall Of Atlantis” every hour on the hour.

A common sight in Vegas… Luxury Limousines! Arrive in style with complimentary champagne served. A round-trip airport transfer in limo would set you back by at least US$140 excluding driver gratuity.

Another popular free show (20 mins) would be “The Sirens of TI” at the Treasure Island. Lots of pyrotechnics and girls running around in bikini style clothing (Some said it’s corny). You need to get there early to get a good view.

Looking forward to see Vegas that’s all about glitz and neon lights tomorrow :D
